When I was young, the trains were clean and always ran on time [Beefy]
The teacher-nuns were never mean and streets were free of crime [Francine]
The motorists were all polite, the streets were free of trash [Beefy]
Hallmark cards were never trite and water didn't splash

Girls resisted petting on the first or second date [Beefy]
Doctors practiced bloodletting and the patients thought it great [Francine]
We all could have a great night out and get change from a penny [Grayman]
And very few were very stout though calories were many [Francine]
I remember my first girlfriend; she was sweet as sugar candy [Grayman]
I'd say she was a pearl and from then on life was dandy

Our parents gave us rugged toys, made proudly in Japan [Helen Owly]
And every gentlewoman had a good and gentle man [Evan]
My father, ever fair and wise, would gently set me straight [Kansas Sam]
Sometimes with anecdotes and lies and yes, I took the bait

We'd chicken then for special times, and beef for everyday [Beefy]
It was legal then to murder mimes and all would yell, "hurray!" [Francine]
We all had boundless energy; our limbs were young and lithe [Grayman]
All families ran in synergy, and gladly gave their tithe

Old men would not in grumbling tone recall a golden age [Beefy]
And no one then would 'piss and moan' although consumed with rage [Francine]
